Teacher Feature: Ashley Long
By: Ani & Marrick Thurman
We sat down with Ashley Long, the receptionist from the alternative school to learn more about her.
Marrick: Where are you from?
Long: I’m from here. I graduated from Logan County High School in 2008, so I’ve lived here my whole life.
Marrick: What made you want to come to Logan County?
Long: Since I graduated from here, it was a familiar place.
Marrick: How do you like your job here?
Long: I like it, it’s interesting. I’m still adjusting and trying to mind my place. Everyone seems to be very kind to students and staff.
Marrick: What’s your favorite and least favorite part about your job?
Long: My favorite part is being able to interact with the students… Makes me feel like I’m young again! My least favorite part is dealing with disrespectful ones.
Marrick: How was the transition from college to your job?
Long: I didn’t finish college. However, I actually did sign up to go back to Hopkinsville Community College.
Marrick: If you could build the perfect student, what would that student be like?
Long: If I could build the perfect student it would be someone who has self-respect, respect for everyone else, and a big heart.
Marrick: Has this always been what you wanted to do?
Long: I have always wanted to work with kids. I played teacher when I was a little girl.
Marrick: What do you offer that uniquely benefits your students?
Long: I give everybody the benefit of the doubt. I’m in the alternative school, so I’m working with students that have a past. But with me, they get to start fresh. I give everybody a second chance, I suppose.
Marrick: How did you choose this job?
Long: My main goal was to get into the school system, because eventually I would like to be a teacher. I’m just trying to work my way up.
Marrick: What are you watching on Netflix?
Long: I don’t have great internet connection where I live, so I don’t have Netflix, but I do watch The Walking Dead. I’m also into Master Chef; I like cooking shows. I have two little ones, so Peppa Pig is always on.
Marrick: What are your hobbies?
Long: Well, I’m a mom, so a lot of what I do depends on what the kids want to do. We go fishing a lot, swimming… The kids like to be outside. I don’t know. I don’t really have much time for hobbies!
Marrick: Any college advice for seniors?
Long: Even if you don’t know what you want to do when you grow up… just to go, because you can always change your mind.
Marrick: Favorite part of college?
Long: My favorite part of college was being able to be on my own, be responsible, make my own decisions, and chose my own path.
Marrick: Favorite sports team?
Long: Louisville. I don’t like Kentucky. I don’t care what anyone thinks about it!
Marrick: If you weren’t working here, what would you be doing?
Long: If I could do anything that I wanted to do, I’d open a wildlife rehabilitation center for local animals in this area. If someone finds an injured bald eagle, they call me.
