Impact Advances to National Tournament
By Blayke Bingham & Abi Lindsey
Over the summer, a local AAU travel basketball team known as Impact (sponsored by Renegade Racing Fuels) played in the National AAU Qualifier Tournament in Owensboro. Players consist of boys in the classes of 2018 and 2019 from both Logan County and Russellville High School. During the qualifying tournament, Impact beat the Western Kentucky Ballers to advance to Boy’s AAU National Tournament in Wichita, Kansas. They will compete on Friday, August 5th through Sunday August 7th.
To better understand their journey, we interviewed two members of the team; Kelby Epley and Third Bell. Their opportunities are exciting, but also nerve racking as they will need to perform to the best of their ability to continue participating in this tournament and also to impress the many college coaches attending this event.
Starting in the 4th grade, Epley and Bell have played on Impact hoping that one day they would have this chance to compete on such a high level. Over the years, Impact has picked up more players from around the county to improve their team, but nonetheless the boys have a bond that can’t be broken both on and off the court.
Epley and Bell made a point to mention their coaches, Jerry Epley and Greg Powell. Epley stated, “Our coaches are just as much a part of this team and the reason we are here as each and every one of us players.” Bell emphasized the impact the coaches have made on all the players’ lives.
